In my devotions today, I came across a few very interesting passages of scripture that I wanted to share.

It starts of in Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Then an interlude, followed by Isaiah 9:2-7
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.

You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as men rejoice
when dividing the plunder.

For as in the day of Midian's defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.

Every warrior's boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.

These verses struck me for a number of reasons.

The first was that Isaiah was writing hundreds of years BEFORE Jesus was born. I know that we've all heard these verses in Handel's "Messiah", but if you really look at this, it's incredible how accurate it is. So accurate, that the Gospels quote these very verses after Jesus was born, showing the fulfillment of them.

The second reason is just how cool they are!! Look at what Jesus did! Look at who He is!! He's a Councilor for when we need advice, when we're angry, he's our Prince of Peace, when we're lonely, he's our EVERLASTING Father, when we're scared or unsure of the future, he is the Mighty God!!!

Please feel free to expound/find more amazing truths from this passage.

It's even more fantastic to think about what He did if we realise what we'd done. We were the subjects, and He the King. We decided that we'd rather be our own King, and not have to live under the reign of God. We murdered, enslaved, lied, lusted, plotted, coveted... the list goes on. Even the Jews, God's chosen people, turned away from Him again and again for thousands of years. We continued to spit in His face.
So what did He do about it? He set aside His infinite glory, came into Rome as a Jewish baby, lived as a carpenter's son, thought to be the son of Joseph (and therefore conceived in wedlock.) He lived perfectly here for over thirty years, and then died on a Roman cross, perfectly innocent of trespasses. And He bore the wrath of God, as well as the immense physical pain.
    WOW!

(That's not really on the passage; it's sort of a tangent from the passage. But it is connected.)

That is the way I felt tonight at the prayer meeting, such a great verse Sean. Thanks for sharing this with us. It is so good to be reminded of his love and awesome plan for us.

God has taken or burdens from us! The bar across our shoulders being the burdens the enemy places on our backs, and the weight of our guilt he is constantly reminding us of, was removed! Vanished! Dissapeared! Breath could now finally re-enter our lungs after many ages in sppression and darkness -- the Breath of Life came into us. As well as the Light of Life shone upon us, that we may be a light to those who still remain suppressed in darkness, gasping for breath, thirsting for water that only te Living Water can quench. In Jesus we find life, oh now death where is your sting?
